Personally I like to follow people that have the same interest as I do. If it look like your account is 99% links and 1% conversation I won’t even bother following you. If you want to follow me that’s great but I’m trying to reach a target audience with my tweets and I don’t have the time to sort through all your random links about erectile disfunction or how I too can lose 40 lbs by the end of the week.

When I follow someone back I usually take the time to check out their profile to see if they are a spammer or not. If they look like they might have something to interesting to say then I click on that little link and become a follower.

Maybe that sounds harsh but that’s just me…keep in mind I’m got a few spammers in there that slip through the cracks but most of the people I follow are followed for a specific reason.

It depends on how you are using it. I use one to welcome my new followers but it’s kinda lame and needs changes. I’ve never noticed any of my followers leaving just because they get an automated message. When I follow someone and get an automated message saying hey I feel like they care about their followers enough to at least welcome them.

On the other hand they can be impersonal. Don’t just say. Hi and thanks but add something like. I can’t wait to read to your tweets or like the one from my NASCAR Profiles says, “I love talking NASCAR”

There are also programs out there that let you schedule future tweets. I think those are awesome, especially if you cover a sporting even like I do. I like to write my articles in advance then schedule them to automatically post to twitter during key viewing times. That saves me from trying to find the link later.

If you are going to do that I recommend using something like HootSuite
